Umbilical Products
There are many applications for umbilical cables each requiring different combinations of functional components within the umbilical. Such components in an umbilical can include some or all of the following :-
- Steel tubes
- Thermoplastic hoses
- Medium voltage power cores
- Low voltage electrical power cables
- Electrical signal cables
- Optical fibre cables
The bundled assembly of functional components may be protected by layers of steel wire armour and inner and outer sheaths of a thermoplastic material (either as an extrusion or a helically wrapped roving).
The product is custom designed for a particular project or application and specific environmental and operational conditions. Dynamic umbilicals are designed and engineered to endure continuous flexing during their operational life whilst static umbilicals are designed to remain stationary following installation. Additionally, the planned installation methodology needs to be considered during the umbilical and attached hardware design stage, as the installation phase can be very demanding, and not without significant risk to the product.
